Dogs 2012

EXHUMATIONS
(3/27/12)

I dig
with shovel
trowel
bony fingers
to rip
their useless
corpses
from the
earth

record setting
same year
winter
then summer
killed many
despite
my best
efforts

azaleas
ornamentals
a four year old
Japanese maple
all dying near
more
of their kind
who seemed
unaffected
by the extreme
temperatures
and overabundance
or lack
of moisture

all
cared for
equally
the disparity
in death
is dispiriting

so I dig
down
to their skeletal
roots
through dirt
stones
cast off
building materials
my mother's
ashes
to free
the dead
and to replace
them
with better hopes
for tomorrow
