DANCE IN A DYING SUN
(11/16/12)

the middle
of November
and the leaves
still fall slowly
from the huge
old oak

they spin
delicately
down
to the browning
ground
on an almost
breezeless
day

yellows
and reds
coloring
the air
with a gently
hued descent

but one
of the participants
seems to defy
the downward
journey
of the majority

a monarch
butterfly
apparently misplaced
from the October
migration
has found
another family
in these fluttering
fellows
of Fall

the insect
selects
a leaf
then follows
its slow trajectory
to the yard
circling
the newfound friend
and accompanying
its journey
to the desiccated
yard

once
the departed flora
settles
the monarch
moves treeward
to find the next
temporary mate
and to begin
another
tenuous
rendezvous
destined to end
in the same
result

tomorrow
a little carcass
may be raked
along with the
other
dead debris

but today
this lost
lepidopteran
has a home
and a swarm
to call
its own

while
its real
rabble
probably basks
in the sunlight
of some
more southern
sky
