Dogs 2012

CLEANING OUT THE GARAGE
(1/31/12)

"what
is it?"

she holds
up
a black
and gray
plastic apparatus
about the size
of a breadbox

it is not
a breadbox

"I don't
know

I don't
remember
seeing it out here
before

is it
Kaleb's?"

her son
will deposit
his unwantables
out here
from time
to time

"I'll
go ask"

she leaves
going out
to the detached
house

I continue
sorting
moving
trashing
a year's worth
of material activity
surrounding
our cars

she's back

"he says
that he didn't
put it out
here"

she hands
it to me
and I study
it
for awhile

it's surprisingly
hard
heavy
and looks
as if
it fits
into a larger
mechanism
of some kind
but I know
not what

"can we
donate this?"

she looks
back

"I guess
we could
but I hate
to just give them
garbage"

I look at
our three piles:
keep
donate
throw away

I throw it
on the throw
away mound

when
we are finished
it will not fit
in the trash can
with the smaller
items
so I put it
on the curb
with a TV stand
a laundry rack
and an ancient
Phase Linear 450W amplifier
that I have tired
of repairing

we finish
the Spring cleaning
that came early
this year
then return
to the house

later
showered
and dressed
in fresh clothes
I look out
the bedroom
window
to the street

strange

I walk
to the kitchen
and inform
my wife

"it's
all gone"

she turns
frowns
and looks
me
up and down

"what's all gone?"

I realize
that I haven't
been
too clear

"the stand
the rack
the amplifier
the…
'it'"

she smiles
a bit

"someone
took it?"

I smile
in return

"I can only
assume"

we both feel
rather lucky
that the nuisance
which the garbage guys
may
or may not
have picked up
the next day
depending upon
their mood
was already
gone

"I can understand
the other things

almost

but the 'it?'"

I shrug
my shoulders

"maybe someone
knew
what 'it'
was"

we laugh
and continue
our Sunday

~

"finally
we can get
the Hell
off of this
miserable planet"

he finishes
plugging in the
long missing
XR95 module

"yeah
but what
do we do
with this
shit?"

the other
motions toward
the TV stand
the laundry rack
and the amplifier

"we'll jettison it
with the rest
of our trash
in low
earth orbit
before escaping

some lowlife
will pick it
up"

they both
laugh
