Dogs 2012

BARGAIN BIN
(9/25/12)

I trail
her
from shop
to shop
thrift store
to thrift store
in this tourist
trap
of a town

we're on
vacation
so time
is not really
a factor

I drive

she wanders

I follow

she buys

I look
at a seemingly
endless collection
of curios
new
and recycled

I listen
to every snippet
of inane
banter
within earshot

I touch
things

I smell
things

in coffee
shops
and restaurants
I taste
them

I open
all
of my senses
and I hope

I yearn

for an answer

or at least
for a clue

I have
learned
that enlightenment
lurks
within
garages
as much
as churches

within
magazines
as much
as bibles

within
the conversations
of cashiers
as much
as professors

I have
learned
that much

maybe
that is all
there is
to know

an awareness
of the possibility

an inkling
of rapture
within
a moment

a chance
of meaning
and purpose
in a geegaw

a muffin

a hug

or a handshake

but really

don't even
think
about touching
me
