Dogs 2012

ANOTHER DOOMSDAY GONE
(12/22/12)

I watched
2012
last night
just for
laughs

another
bad movie
about the end
of civilization
as we know it

a story
triggered apparently
by the misconception
that the Mayan calendar
ends on 12/21/12
instead of beginning
another of many
continuing
cycles

the Mayans
were not so
pessimistic

what is
this ridiculous
need

this perverted
desire

to be
the last
generation?

would
that make us
special?

who
would be left
to know?

who
would be left
to care?

my first
remembered experience
of the phenomenon
was the Jupiter
Jolt
of the 70's

the planets
were to align
in such a way
that the massive
gravitation pull
of the outer planets
would rip asunder
the inner ones

even
as a teenager
I couldn't understand
the rapturous joy
in which the
countdown
took place

my only
concern
was never
reaching
drinking age

I needed
a beer

not
an apocalypse

that day
passed
and people continued
like it never
happened

Y2K
was looming
on the horizon

at least
I could drink
my way
through
that event

we are all
so doomed
on a personal
level
that one
would think
our singular despair
would be more
than enough
to sustain
our dread

instead
we are all
such egotistic
unrealistic immortals
that we somehow
believe
that we will
individually
be spared
to witness
some final
cataclysm
that will visit
retribution
upon the human
race
for our sins

or for our
astronomical
alignment

a race
that doesn't
seem to include
the delusional
observer
ensconced
safely
in a recliner

or a Mercedes
Benz

now
a non-drinker
I seem
to have
little
to lose

I met
an actuarial
accountant
a few years
ago

he told
me that
August 20th
2038
was my
date

I am
planning
to attend
his funeral
three years
eight months
and thirteen days
later

I'll be
the one
holding
a bottle
of Champagne
