Dogs 2012

AIM LOW IN STEERING
(10/25/12)

ahead
in the street
I saw him
coming

half
in my lane
on a collision
course

I had
a car
beside me
to the right
and another
right
behind me

nowhere
to evade
his approach

I looked ahead
into the windshield
of some twin cab
extended
horror show
of a pickup
not well suited
for city streets
even when
driven
properly

through
the safety glass
I saw
only the top
of his head
as he was
staring intently
into his
lap

not good

we were
closing quickly
and none
of my fellow
travelers
seemed aware
of the danger

I would
have
to veer right
to suffer
a side to side
rather than
a head
on

but
in the last
stupid
split second
he glanced up
and jerked
his wheel
to his right
and cleared my lane
just enough
for me
to pass
unmolested

as
we missed
each other
by an inch
or two
I noticed
his hand
now at the top
of the wheel

the hand
formerly
below view

the hand
holding
a "smart" phone
seemingly
much
out of place
in his grasp

his
priorities
had shifted
to the next
word
instead
of the next
yellow stripe

he had
nearly texted
both
of our days
to death

natural
breathing
restored
I continued
to the next
traffic light

where
the driver
of the minivan
ahead of me
was watching
the news
on his rearview
onboard
TV

sitting
quite still
underneath
a bathing glow
of green
