Dogs 2012

A DOG OF A DIFFERENT COAT
(1/27/12)

two yards
down
it barks
incessantly

at everything

at nothing

my wife
wants it
dead

she's complained

she's filed
complaints

the neighbors
are apparently
oblivious

I look across
through the
progression
of chain link
at the yellow
Lab/retriever mix
and tell it
to shut
up

it usually
does
in a curious
manner

the other
day
it escaped
the confines
of its residential
prison
and roamed
the neighborhood
at will

my wife
called to me
from the front
yard
and I walked outside
to find her
petting
a quiet
frightened
formerly chastised
canine
who wags her tail
and wets herself
at human contact

a pathetic
creature
with no natural
animal confidence
beyond the limits
of her confinement

my wife
now feels
sorry for
the young
bitch

the next time
that we hear
the baying
in the night
her animosity
shifts
to the human
element

she
madly searches
the phone book
for the number
to People Control
