Dogs 2012

A DISTANCE OF ONE
(3/6/12)

Brother Bollocks
awakes
on a day
that begins
unremarkably
like any other

remarkably
however
as he attends
to his daily migrations
a revelatory realization
begins creep into
his otherwise
predictable
routine

the people
are fading
away

out
in public
his fellow
human beings
have become
mere apparitions
outlines
ethereal etchings
in the air

they seem
not
to notice

they proceed
along
their diurnal courses
as if nothing
had changed

ghosts
going through
ghostly motions

puzzled
Brother Bollocks
still returns
to his expected
responsibilities
only slightly distracted
by the diminishing
denizens
of the city

as the sun
lowers
in the West
he gathers his
more than tangible
belongings
starts
his very solid
automobile
and travels
the opaque
roadways
to his home

back
in his neighborhood
he sees neighbors
also waxing
transparent

their waves
and smiles
dimming
with the light

all else
seems
the same

car secured
in garage
he enters
his house
to greet
his wife

insubstantially
she approaches
him
leaving a whisper
of a kiss
but no warmth
upon his cheek

he settles
in his chair
for an evening beer
and glances
at the newspaper
for any hint
of irregularities
but the headlines
look much
the same
as the day
before

his wife
calls him
to the evening
meal
but before
arising
he holds
his hands
in front
of his face

he sees
only the usual
dry skin
veins
and odd bits
of hair

he bends
to scratch
the sleeping dog
behind an ear
sees
the appropriate
movement of tail
and wonders
what's
for dinner
