WORKING IN A COAL MINE
(10/4/11)

my earliest
childhood memory
of responsibilities
were of lies
concocted
to avoid
the them

my earliest
childhood memory
of achievements
were of their
attainability
through
artifice

my earliest
childhood memory
of covetable possessions
were of their
potential for theft
without
detection

my earliest
childhood memory
of women as sexual beings
were of them
bound gagged blindfolded
allowing unfettered
untraceable touches

my earliest
childhood memory
of loved ones
were of their
deaths
and my life
after those facts

I have labored
every waking hour
of my entire life
digging through
the murky madness
just to find
one
shining diamond
of simple sanity
to present
to the public

damaged
from birth
the fact
that I am
still a free man
is an unmitigated
miracle
