Dogs 2011

RESCUE
(6/11/11)

I saw
something hopping
across the street
as I navigated
the last
few
remaining blocks
home
on a Friday
afternoon

bird
apparently

I did
not
slow
assuming
pending flight
for safety

but
as I
neared
perilously close
I saw it to be
a baby sparrow
unfortunately still
in an preflight
existence

I only
had time
to swerve enough
to straddle
the creature
most recently
a nestling

I slowed
to see
rearview evidence
of life

immobile

helpless

neck stretched
in wonder
precariously
balanced upright
in shock

I turned
the car
around

approached
the fledgling
cautiously

stopped

got out

slowly
walked toward
the scraggly
bundle of feathers
and fluff
who did not
resist
until feeling
my fingers
close

then
a mad
leaping dash
flapping about
with useless
little
wings

I chased
and captured
cupping it
gently
muffling
loud protestations
complaining
no doubt
to momma

home
I showed
the catch
to my wife

the wildlife
advocate

who
in no time
had us in route
to a vet clinic
that specialized
in rehabilitating
misplaced
feral fauna

just the start
of another
wild weekend
in Tulsa
