ODE TO AN OCULAR MIGRAINE
(9/19/11)

first
a small
persistent flash
appears
near the center
of vision

like
the remnant
of a tiny
sun
recently seen

then
a ring
of expanding
pulsating
jagged
lightning
begins brutally
to dominate
the sight
obscuring
all other
daily reality

light headed
and nauseous
the visual hostage
feels trapped
in a dizzying
disaster
of horizontal
vertigo

there
is nothing
to do
but suffer
in stillness
through
the blinding
static

eventually
the disturbance
spreads
to the periphery
allowing
a clearing eye
in the synaptic storm
and restoring
some balance
to the teetering
senses

finally
a parting halo
of discontent
dissipates
leaving the
victim
in a heightened
state
of normality

left
to reflect
30 minutes spent
in a gripping
uneasy limbo
with trigger
unknown

time
falling
nowhere

straight
ahead
