NOT THE SAME SUN
(10/10/11)

"your arms
aren't right"

a young
boy
said
as he sat
across from me
in the waiting
room

I looked
at him
then
down
at the limbs
in question

"they start
at my shoulders
and end
at my hands

what's wrong
with them?"

he used
a finger
to draw
my attention

"the moon
on that one
should face
away
from the sun
on that one"

I looked
down
again

the tattoos

I forget
about them
except
in odd moments
such as
these

the sun
on my left
was done
three and a half
years
before the crescent
on the right
with not much
thought given
to their
realtive positions

both have
faces

one
young
smooth skinned
full of energy
and possibilities

one
old
craggy complected
contemplating
universal conundrums

but
I didn't feel
like explaining
the time set
or mind set
of the two
sets of ink

someone
had apparently
already had
an astronomy
lesson
or two

"do you see
this small star
by the top horn
of the moon?"

I asked

he leaned
forward
squinted
and nodded
in the affirmative

"well
that's really
this sun
over here
but very
far away"

he frowned
thought
a bit
then asked

"so there's
another sun
somewhere else
shining
on that moon?"

it was my
turn to
nod

he looked
over my
shoulder
and frowned
as he figured

"then
where's
the other
sun?"

I pivoted
around
so that
my right elbow
pointed
at him

"today
it's right where
your sitting"

his
narrowed eyes
widened some
and finally
a smile
appeared

he made
a spit edged
exhalation
of enjoyment
just as the door
to the doctors'
offices
swung open

"come on
Sweetie!

it's time
to go home"

he ran
to grab
the woman's
hand
but
kept smiling
back at me
until they
disappeared
around
the corner

I pulled
my short sleeves
as long
as possible
and waited
