NO ONE OWNS THE DEAD
(7/18/11)

he
shakes
his head
in disgust
if I accidentally
mention
the subject

"you don't
know death"

he'll say

three years
in Vietnam
and the ghosts
still call
his name

I change
the topic

~

she laughs
at me
in childish
glee

3 years old
and she sees
her dead grandmother
even though
she barely
knew her

"yur silly"

she tells me
when I don't
see her
as well

~

my mother
died
in my arms
over 10 years
ago

"I want
to go home"

was her last
intelligible
sentence

what I hear
and see
of her visitations
varies
through
the years

~

the dead
seem to have
their own
agenda
independent
of our claims
over them
