NEIGHBOR
(9/16/11)

unseemly
screams
come through
the walls
of my home
disturbing
my rest

I walk
to a window
and spy
the source
of the commotion

to call it
a person
may be a gross
assumption
indeed

a two
legged
creature
of some sort
running pell-mell
down the street
yelling frantically
and clawing
clumsily
at the back
of its neck

insanity
would be
the easy
conclusion

but
in passing
I see a knowing
and resigned
all too human
look in the eyes
that belies
the body's
catastrophic
comportment

it rushes
away
driven onward
by some incessant
inordinate intensity
to ingest all
that life has
to offer
immediately
and without
limitations

it wants
everything

right
now

I draw
the blinds
and return
to the comfort
of a chair
and a book

as I
patiently flip
through the pages
a small
but persistent
itch
begins
to crawl
compellingly
down
my
spine

I reluctantly
replace
the tome
upon the table
and start
the search
for my shoes

reading
will have
to wait
