MINDSHAKE
(11/1/11)

ordinary
me
performing
an ordinary task
on an ordinary day
hardly a thought
involved

suddenly
the earth
shifts
beneath my feet
and a dizzying
otherworldly
consciousness
takes hold

familiar
objects
look foreign
as the room
blurs strange
and I'm not sure
if I'm falling
or being
carried
away

is this
it?

my last
impressions
of an all
too fleeting
mortality?

no

of course
not

the thick pile
of the bathroom rug
merely gave way
a fraction
of an inch
when I leaned a bit
from one foot
to the other
while brushing
my teeth

panic
impulses
shot from feet
to brain
alerting synapses
addled by age
and past indulgences
which then
fired uncertainly
mistranslating
the sensation

the only
emergency
was a near fall
while overcorrecting
my presumed
plummet into
another
dimension

senses
regained
I bend over
and wipe up
the toothpaste
I just slobbered
on the floor

my dominion
is secured
by janitorial
duties alone

I only hope
the lapse
is temporary
and not
the feared
terminal
downward slide

I still
have a shower
to take
