Dogs 2011

MIGRATION WHISPERS
(11/23/11)

you see
them
through
Spring
and Summer
singly
or in small groups
flying
perched
or hopping
along the ground
in search
of food

then
one late Fall
afternoon
you see
a hundred
or more
sitting along
a sagging
power line
chattering away
apparently discussing
the weather
or the season

then
as if all receiving
the same message
simultaneously
they take
flight

you would expect
some haphazard
helter-skelter
of wing flapping
but instead
they seem
to fly
as one

a many feathered
avian wave
swelling
rippling
appearing
as if liquid
in an inverted
sky

they ascend
descend
change direction
en masse
thousands
of bird brains
linked
by a common
cause

air currents
seemingly defined
by disturbances
in their mottled
masses

clawed clouds
of chirps
and rustles
casting shadows
of genetic
imperative

you see
them
for days

sometimes
weeks

then
they are
gone

you return
to witnessing
just a few
stragglers
who did not hold
to the hint
of exodus

one day
you rake
a few sparrow
skulls
along
with the fallen
leaves

winter
is near
