JEWELLED SERPENT
(7/23/11)

I tread
the smoldering
summer pavement
and see
something coiled
in the street
up ahead

a snake
of emeralds
sliding
a silvered tongue
in and out
to sense
the environment

sensing
me
it winds
and prepares
to strike
as I pass

I do not
divert
my path

I feel fangs
of
green ice
injecting
the welcomed
altering venom
into
a sweaty
calf

I maintain
my pace
looking
for new subtleties
in the surroundings

a little
death
can clear away
the clutter
of the
living

sometimes
just enough
to reveal
the truth
that was always
there
