Dogs 2011

CLUNKER
(9/15/11)

I heard
him
before
I saw
him

then
lights
came up
quickly
in the rear
view

he passed
me
in a mechanical
maelstrom
of rattles
roars
smoke
and music

I was doing
10 miles over
the posted speed
on an almost empty
6:30 am street
but his bare arm
crooked loosely
was blocks ahead
in seconds

a stoplight
changing yellow
to red
had no affect
as he blasted
through
the intersection
then squealed
a left turn
from the
right hand lane
at the next
side street
out of sight
but still growling
through the dawning
darkness

his exhaust
lingered
in a stinking
haze
of

"I don't give
a shit"

~

I remember
living the same
some 15 years
past

it was never
a case
of blatant
disregard
for traffic
laws

in my
insanity
I simply felt
that I drove
a higher
road

rules
and regulations
seemed not
to apply

probably
the reason
that jail cell
incarcerations
seemed such
a mystery
to me

~

I finally
cleared
the influence
of his noise
and smell
in my well-maintained
if aging
automobile

I rolled down
the window
turned up
Rage Against The Machine
and attempted
to recall
that angst
of purpose

on my
way
to the
office
