Dogs 2011

BACKWARD DAYS
(11/22/11)

some mornings
get off
to a strange
start

you forget
to brush
your teeth

the power
is out

someone
firebombs
the house
down
the
street

the routine
and rhythm
of your hours
are somehow
broken
and there is
no time
to go back
and begin
again

you cannot
fix it

you just
have to roll
with the day
as it
unfolds

the usual
schedule
has been shattered
and the mirror
that is your life
no longer
reflects
the ordinary

on days
such as these
there is an opportunity
to see existence
in a different
perspective

your concept
of normal
has been altered
if only by
a bit
and
personal
revelations
are possible

you see
a flower garden
that you could swear
never existed
at an intersection
that you pass
through
every day

you remember
a song
that you haven't
hummed
in decades

you finally
notice
that the rotting
garbage
in the streets
covered
in tattered
clothing
is actually corpses
fellow humans
who have had
their days
altered
irrevocably

you stop
thoughtlessly
stepping over
the bodies
and finally
look
at a face
in recognition

this is someone
who perhaps
started their day
in the usual way
but somehow
has run out
of normal

you have
an advantage

you had
a flat tire
this morning

you
are
ready
