Dogs 2011

A DIFFERENT DESK
(10/6/11)

they
would load us
in a van
at about
5pm

a smelly
disheveled bunch
we were
on our way
to an office
complex
for an evening
of janitorial
contract
work

it was
the best
that most
of us
could do

upon
arrival
there would be
a mad scramble
to the super's office
in a lazy hope paradox
of being assigned
a soft job
by showing
initiative

I liked
vacuuming
the best

I enjoyed
navigating
around the desks
file cabinets
cubicles
and conference
rooms
in air conditioned
comfort

I was
particularly
intrigued
by any desktop
decorations

photos
greeting cards
assorted knickknacks
and especially
candy dishes

sugar
was a primary
co-addiction
at the time

how wonderful
to have the extra
time and energy
to have normal
jobs
lives
families
and artifacts
representing them

I couldn't
imagine myself
in such
a position

they seemed
to be people
from other
planets

people
not concerned
about their
next meal
or their next
place
to sleep

job done
we would pile
back
into the vehicle
for a return ride
to the temporary hire
storefront
downtown

we would then
disperse
into the night
pockets loaded
with quick cash
and sweets
all looking
for our next
high

~

today
I sit at
my desk
and wonder
what interpretations
the cleanup crew
might derive
from this
workspace clutter

do they
consider me
a lucky guy
seeing computers
stacked papers
pictures
of my wife
and stepson?

probably
just thinking
about
getting paid

regardless

all edibles
are kept
              far back
in my bottom
drawer
