Dogs 2010

WAITING ROOM
(10/26/10)

I find
an isolated
chair
in which
to sit

away
from the
"courtesy"
TV

away
from the
screaming
children

away
from the
cell phone talking
adults

I do
my best
to find a
non-youth
non-female
oriented publication
to read the time
away

the words
grab my attention
and I am grateful
for them

I attempt
to regulate
my breathing
in order to decrease
my medical anxiety
and thereby
my blood pressure

a silly game
for an adult
to play
but I know
that it is
necessary

medical assistants
pop out
of two different doors
representing
the two different doctors
utilizing
that wing
of offices

names
sometimes
first
sometimes
last
sometimes
both
called
as the patient
rotation
proceeds

inhale
hold
exhale
hold
smile a bit
at the ludicrous
nature
of my activity

"Patrick?"

two of us
get up

"Daly?"

I sit
back down
as that Patrick
looking much more
in need
of attention
enters
through the door
of acceptance

"you
were here
first"

an old
woman's voice
informs me

I ignore
the targeted
verbiage

"you
were here
first"

the point
repeated

"that's OK"

I tell her
without
looking up

"I got here
a bit early"

back
to the black
and white

back
to the measured
breaths

I am
only here
for a physical
but I'm beginning
to feel
physically ill
from the surroundings

25 minutes
past my appointed time
50 minutes
after my arrival
the "Other Patrick"
is called

smiles
all around
as I am finally
admitted
sat
cuffed
and judged

135
over
89

not bad

it's been
as high
as 150/100
which is the reason
for the pre-requisite
rationing
of air

at home
on our couch
with my wife
checking
I'm 124/78

I wouldn't
have
a blood pressure
problem at all
if were not
for these
visits

I am weighed
temperatured
and rushed
to a small room
of solitary
refinement

to wait
some
more

breathing
normally

alone
