TROUBLE IN PARADISE
(4/9/10)

Thursday

over 40 hours
already
accounted for
on my timesheet

finally
coming through
the back door
of home
to decompress
a bit

they're
both there
in the kitchen

something's
wrong

my stepson
has hit a curb
speeding through
construction
just blocks
from the house
popping
and ruining
a tire

I listen

I commiserate

I walk
on through
to the bedroom
and begin taking off
my office
clothes

"when
are you going
to help him?"

she asks

"he's never
changed
a flat"

after only
two years
of marriage
the mother/son dynamic
is still a bit difficult
for me to fathom

he's 20
he's smart
he's a good kid
he's just
a little
unsure
of himself

he and I
have
an understanding

if he needs
my help
he'll ask
for it

despite
his mother's
attempted
manipulations

stripped
to boxers
I go
to work out
and hopefully relieve
a bit of the day's
anxiety

I am left
alone
with my
exercise

all the while
though
I'm looking out
of the window
to the front yard
to see what's happening
with his car

not much

30 minutes later
he and his mom
finally go out
and open
the trunk

it takes
another 10
before he's
at the damaged
element
to begin
replacement

my wife
looking over
his shoulder

I'm to
my stretches
inside
and progress
is seemingly
being made
out

cooled down
I put on some
everyday clothes
and venture through
the front door
to assess
the situation

they both
look up
at me
then down
to a flat
spare
now
on the
vehicle

I suggest
Sears
Wal-Mart
Firestone

my wife
gets her car
and my stepson
loads the wheel
with the punctured tire
into her trunk

they
are off

always
things
to do
I decide
to mow
as much of the yard
as possible
before
their return

40
minutes later
or so
they pull up
looking angry
and disgusted

it was
too close
to the end of day
at both of places
where they asked
and no one
would help them

I don't
point out
that if he would have
started doing something
right away
instead of waiting
for someone
to tell him
what to do
that time
would not
have been
an issue

no point

the dilemma
was dead
for the day

I offer
to take them
out to eat
and later
it's Mexican food
and a recounting
of the days
activities
with both rants
and laughs

the day ends
with my stepson
making arrangements
to get the tire fixed
the next day
and a kiss
goodnight
from my wife
as we get
into bed

when
capable people
are left
to their capabilities
all usually
ends
well

woe be
to Sears
and Wal-Mart
however
