THE TIDE
(2/27/10)

exhausted
and overwhelmed
we suffocate
each day
under a deluge
of people

a tsunami
of humanity
covering us
crushing us
drowning us
and scattering
our belongings

their elbows
in our sides
their hands
on our wallets
as we are jabbed
and robbed
by the flotsam
and jetsam
of social
and economic decline
that endlessly litter
the churning
waters

every stroke
every breath
every heartbeat
is a battle
against
the ever-flowing
crowed
current

at times
we think
that we can
drop out
but just
when we find
a deserted island
on which to breathe
the persistent ocean
flows over
our sanctuary
reestablishing
its whirlpool
of doom

taxed
of all energy
our tendency
may be to collapse
sink
and die
a dark death
deep beneath
those weighty
waves

but
never quit

we must
struggle
following the bubbles
of sensibility
to the surface
rebirthing
ourselves
into the atmosphere
then advancing
to the shore

however
we cannot rest
and recuperate
for very long
upon
the becoming
beach
because
as one swell
recedes
the next
is surely
gaining strength

a sea
of inevitability
fuels them
forever
toward us
to smother
our individuality
and to reclaim
its dominion
of status
quo

we run
inland
to the high
ground
of solitude
as the surf
erases the evidence
of our escape
from the
sands
