Dogs 2010

SUMMER STORM
(8/2/10)

sweltering
after our usual
4 miles
in the unusual
101 degrees
we approached
our dying
yard

"I guess
I'll water"

I told my
wife
as she
scurried
for the indoor
comfort
of the AC

sprinkler set
I decided
to pull
a few weeds
while I was
outside
anyway

a large
cloud
temporarily
obscured the sun
but the heat
continued
to bake
the sweat
from me

head
to armpits
to crotch
to soaked
soles
I was awash
in a personal
salt bath

finally
I conceded
and went
inside
as well

it was
time
to water
myself

just
as I grabbed
the shower
faucets
a tremendous
flash
and explosion
occurred simultaneously
right outside
the bathroom
window

I jumped
back
then heard
the first
huge raindrops
hitting
the roof

no precipitation
predicted
it seemed
Christmas
on the first day
of August

we rushed
to open
the front door
and stood amazed
at the downpour

we exchanged
idiotic grins
then dashed out
into the deluge

40 and
50 years old
we looked like
Coked up kids
out there
racing about
in the refreshing
rain

just minutes
later
it was over

then steam
began to rise
from the still hot
streets

the sun
shoved away
the dark cloud
to see
our still
surprised smiles
quickly wilting

I turned
off the sprinkler
and we went
back
inside
