Dogs 2010

SPIN THE WHEEL
(5/11/10)

we wake up
in the morning
we go to sleep
at night
not knowing
if either
will be
our last

the five
who were killed
yesterday
listened
to the same
weather reports
as I
their chances
of seeing a tornado
the same
as mine
but somehow
their probabilities
were 100%
while mine
was zero

make
breakfast

take
a shower

bend over
to tie
a shoe

start
a car
truck
motorcycle

drive to
work
store
movie

board
a bus
plane
train

begin a
vacation
cruise
hike

work on the
vehicle
home
yard

watch the
sky
people
ground

or just lie
sit
stand
walk
run
and know
that it could be
the last thing
that you ever
do

the routine
as well as
the bizarre
can be our
undoing

maybe
that's why
we busy ourselves
with all of those
trivialities of
life

if we had
too much time
to contemplate
the transitory nature
of our precarious existence
the burden of being
would be
too great

no wonder
some go
insane

no wonder
a little insanity
visits us all
from time
to time

when
making
a piece
of toast
can be your
last act on Earth
wondering why
we are here
seems quite
irrelevant

I flinch
as I reach
for a cup
of coffee
to start
another
day
