Dogs 2010

ROTUND RODENT
(9/3/10)

I saw
him
outside
the bedroom window
yesterday

a big
reddish
bastard
who gets fat
in the Fall
from acorns
off the huge oak
out front
and pecans
from the tree
in the backyard

he has
adopted us
not out of love
but for the food
that our yard
provides

never afraid
as we near
he will rear back
on his haunches
and considers us
as he continues
to munch
his meal

within arm's
reach
he will lazily
lumber away
apparently
not due to fear
but to ward off
interruption
of the feeding
process

he lives
to eat

at times
he will sit
on the back porch
while we are away
then watch us approach
upon our return
to retreat
partially
as we reach
the door

we have
only
seen him
scamper
up trees
when dogs
or strange adults
are about

he is
too big
to worry
about cats
or children

the nuts
are on the ground
early this year
due to a dearth
of deluges
during
the summer
so he fattens
sooner than usual
for the coming
cold

our stoic
squirrel buddha
watching over us
with masticating
bemusement

we
are not sure
if he is our pet
or if we are
his

we are sure
that he
knows
