Dogs 2010

RELIEF
(8/14/10)

it seemed
a waste

watering
brown grass
in the 103 degree
August heat

if nothing
else
it should reduce
the fire
hazard

I set
the sprinkler
practically
on the curb
to cover
the southern
extremities
of the yard

the location
necessitated
some overspray
into the street
but that
was tolerable

I checked
the pattern
one more time
then went back
into the
house

during
a break
from dinner
and a DVD
I looked
out a window
to gauge
the efficacy
of the irrigation

walking up
the street
approaching our lot
was a young man
curly black hair
on the chunky side
but overall
a healthy
looking
individual

beside him
was a toddling
tiny girl
wispy blonde
perhaps
just short
of two

he slowly
strode along
and she kept up
with short
choppy steps
each of which
she watched
with intense
concentration

when
she reached
abreast of
the sprinkler
she felt
the mist
and stopped
slowly turning
her head
searching
for the source
of coolness

when
she spotted
the device
she stood upright
and slowly
raised her arms
toward the direction
of the noise
and activity

she frowned
in evaluation
and hesitantly
approached
the refreshing
emanation

her father
talked to her
as she welcomed
the floating droplets
finally relaxing
that little
face

the spray
must have felt
fantastic
considering
the temperature

he began
to resume
their route
trying to coax
the child
to follow
but she
stood fast
a few feet
away

finally
a smile spread
and she rushed
the sprinkler
as he scooped her
up suddenly
laughing
at her reaction

he walked on
carrying her
as she pointed back
over his shoulder
at our yard
in wonder

they advanced
out of sight
and I was left
to watch
the water
by myself

it hadn't
been a waste
after all
