Dogs 2010

PICK A NUMBER
(12/1/10)

we see them
everywhere

times
scores
heights
weights
distances

those
artificial lines
of demarcation
challenging
us
to attain them
or be
resigned
to disgrace

games
as well
as life
plotted for us
along convoluted
courses
of human
construct

can we not
simply live
without
some arbitrary
numbers
being stamped
upon on our backs
or placed
in our permanent
files?

last
month
a 27 year old
runner
fearing
those accumulating
ticking seconds
died
a few hundred
yards short
of a marathon
finish

26.1 miles
his mark
of failure

death
his parting
gift

instead of running
I would rather
imagine him
drinking a beer
with his friends
and watching
football
on TV

laughing
at the count
of empty cans
as daylight
turns
to dusk

waking
the next day
with only
a slight
headache

forgetting
who won

who lost

living
to see
the sun
again
