Dogs 2010

MI ESPOSA
(5/7/10)

chinga

drunk
and late
again

should
pull over
and call her
to diffuse
the situation

I find
a quiet
side street
and drive down
a few blocks
into a dark spot
away from
the street
lights

she's not
happy

I try
to tell her
that we worked
late
then decided
to have a few beers
and that
I'll be home
in 15 minutes

she yells
and will not listen
to a word
that I have
to say

then
a porch light
comes on
and some
short woman
steps out
and gives me
the fish
eye

great

now I have
two
angry women

I'm across
the street
and a house down
from her
so I don't
know
what the
problem
could be

she points
she waves me
away
she scrunches
her little face
but is afraid

I wave
back
smiling
and nodding

my wife
is losing energy
and I begin
to get a few
words of my own
into the
mix

then
some maricón
in his boxers
t-shirt
and house shoes
comes out
of the house
that I'm parked
next to
carrying his garbage
out to the curb

he's in
the light
and I'm in
the shadow
of his house
so he doesn't
see me

but
the puta
across the street
starts talking to him
then pointing at
me

I see
his shoulders
slump
a little

he doesn't
want to deal
with her shit
either

he walks
over to me
and asks
if I need
any help

the help
that I need
he can't
give me

I hold up
the phone
and tell him
that I'm talking
to my wife
but I'm slurring
in Spanish
so realize
that he doesn't
understand
me

"talking
to my wife"

I tell him
in careful
English

he nods
seeming
to sympathize
but looks over
at the loca

"you're making
the neighbors
nervous"

he smiles

I nod
my comprehension

he walks
away
the woman
goes inside
and my wife
is now quiet
on the phone

she's still
mad

I try
a new approach
telling her that
tomorrow
that I'll fix
the car

more quiet

I make
a few more
concessions
and finally
hear her
sigh

I ask
if she's OK
now
but catch
movement
in my rear view
and see that
same cabrón
behind me
pen and paper
in hand
apparently
writing down
my license plate
number

"finished yet?"

he's no longer
sympathetic

the night
seems
to be getting
worse

I tell my wife
goodbye
start
the truck
put it in gear
and slowly
pull away

there was
still time
for a drink
or two
down
the road
