Dogs 2010

LEVEL GROUND
(1/22/10)

the
parking brake
on my truck
through combination
of packed ice
and excessive force
is no longer
functional

many
of the simple
day to day
excursions
now
have to be rethought
in relation
to altitude
and incline

the old
transmission
has suffered
much abuse
and can no longer
be trusted
to shoulder
the load
alone

even
our sloped driveway
presents
a new obstacle
and I instead
pull into street
idling in neutral
run back to the garage
and close the door
before dashing
back
to begin
my journey

the neighbors
must think me
insane

they
would think me
criminal
however
if my vehicle
rolled down the driveway
across the street
and into their
cars
trees
or houses

the dealer
no longer
carries the parts
necessary
for repair
and I prowl
the internet
and junkyards
in search
of a solution

in the
interim
however
I have become
quite accustom
to seeking out
sanctuaries
of flatness
on which
to rest

one day
my personal
parking brake
will malfunction
and I too
will be susceptible
to the vagaries
of elevation
and decline

parts
and repairs
will inevitably
be difficult
to procure

I prepare
for that day
by evening my responses
to life's ever shifting
levels of perception
hopefully to acquire
some foundation
of relative
sanity

in parking
as in life
you can
never be
too careful

one slip
is all
it takes
