Dogs 2010

LESSER MAN
(2/12/10)

he should
be pleased

he should
at least
be grateful

he is
happily married
relatively healthy
satisfactorily employed
and experiencing
no great
financial
spiritual
or social
shortfalls

he is a man
who knows
his limitations

he is firmly
based
in reality

however

he walks
into a room
as if he just filled
a recently vacated space
formerly occupied
by more complete
individual

nothing
seems
quite right

he looks out
into the world
and sees a vaudeville act
put on for the benefit
of only
its perverted
performers

life seems
a ridiculous
sideshow

he talks
to others
hiding his dismay
through his own
one-man show
of exhausted denial
and non-confrontation
simply smiling
for the sake
of a smile

they seem
to be idiots
and fools

he writes
to purge
his sensibilities
vomiting his bile
of disbelief
onto the keyboard
in hope
of deliverance

the writings
seem to be left
by a stranger

what
could be wrong?

nothing
of course

all is
at it should
be

misplaced
expectations
and other-worldly visions
hamper his true
participation
in the daily
ordeal
of humanity

he squints
and strains
seeing only
the shadows
of tomorrow's
possibility

he longs
for escape
but sadly knows
that his footsteps
are his own
most distant
shore

he sighs
closing his eyes
watching wisps
of hope
laugh
at his lack
of acceptance

he sleeps
knowing that
his dreams
are lies

he dies
without
caring
