Dogs 2010

LEFT BEHIND
(4/23/10)

"it's
an adventure
really"

some
adventure

he was
dying
a slow death
body part
after body part
progressively
withering
away

"each day
the world
seems a bit
more different

a bit
more foreign"

he was
already dead
from the neck
down

his voice
craggy
his eyes stuck
straight ahead

"I feel
as if
I'm in a tunnel
going extremely fast
all in the periphery
blurred
and becoming
dark"

the doctor
said
a couple of
weeks
at most

at least
he was not
in pain

"the strangest
smells
as well

a mixture
of flowers
cinnamon
and charred
flesh

a barbecue
in a Springtime
park"

he didn't
seem to realize
that he was
the one
on the
grill

"and it
sounds
as if
there's a distant
approaching train
what I imagine
a weatherman
was describing
when talking
about a
tornado

it's an
overwhelming
low visceral
hum
but comforting
actually"

I don't
know what
to say to him
when he tells
me these
things

he knows
the facts
as well
as I

"it's
a grand excursion
really

one I never
would have expected
at the end
of life"

soon
he wouldn't
be able
to speak
or see

I wonder
what his
grand excursion
will seem like
to him
then

my shift
nearly over
I still have
one more
job
to do

"Mr. Dempsey?

I'm going
to change you
now

your family
will be here
soon"

his brow
furrowed

this part
of the adventure
he did not
appreciate
as much

"very well
let's get it
done"

it will
be strange
to come in
one day
soon
and not
be able
to hear him talk
as he has
for all
these months

his journey
will continue
alone
no doubt

but I will
miss
being along
for the
ride
