Dogs 2010

JULY RAIN
(7/8/10)

the summer
typically
scorches away
all moisture
of earth
and atmosphere
by this time
of year

sprinklers
irrigating
parched lands
humidifiers humming
in houses
of arid air
are the norm
past Independence Day
in this part
of the country

this year
the heat
of the Midwest
hangs about
the East Coast
and unseasonably
cool showers
flood the streets
and feed
the mosquitoes
of the Plains

the old ones
are confused

the young ones
are energized

in between
I watch
the weather

rotating
radar greens
yellows
and reds
covering the canvas
of a local
TV screen

outside
the window
gray clouds
wring Gulf influx
from churning skies
to soak the earth
and pavement

Spring
mushrooms
sprout from yards
heedless
of calendars

a strange
prevailing mist
veils
our city
and softens
the season

I shield
my glasses
from precipitation
as I walk out
to the truck
each morning

what it means
I have no
idea

the engine
hesitates
as we all wait
for dry
hot days
to return

maybe
come August
