Dogs 2010

INFOLARITY
(3/26/10)

I spend
my days
sorting through
millions of characters
of extraneous data
attempting
to relate them
to the task
at hand

letters
numbers
diacritics
control and
special characters
all flow past
in myriad text mirages
as I unfocus my eyes
and try to divine
patterns
in the nonsense

at times
I'll export it all
into a spreadsheet
hazarding sorts
on different elements
to see if families form
or groups
appear

what
strikes me strange
as one column aligns
is that others
seem to find
their own
unrelated
relationships

some
are understandable

sorts
on company names
will collocate rows
of similarly named firms
from the same
country

or sorts
on oil and gas
production numbers
collect companies
in proximity
with those
of approximate
aggregate revenues

but
when sorts
on the leading characters
of email addresses
bracket people
from the same
company
and location

I don't
have a
clue

or when sorts
on contact names
group together executives
who attended
the same
university

I am
bumfuzzled

I don't know
whether it's all
telling me
something
or if
it's telling me
that I don't
know anything
at all

I see
an apparent
oasis of order
on the horizon
and point
my camel
toward it
