HOLIDAY NATION
(6/1/10)

Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day

three
of the most
meaningful
marks on the calendar
for us
as a country

they just
happen
to bracket
and define
a summer

a season
with meanings
far less
solemn

on the
local news
a veteran bemoans
the loss of significance
for our days
of remembrance

unfortunately
most are still
out of town
at the lake
or in the
backyard
and probably
miss
the report

he looks
to be a man
well into
retirement

perhaps
he does not
understand
the loss
of benefits
job security
commensurate pay
as well as a safe
and sane
work week

facts
that many
of his generation
were able
to take
for granted

more
than ever
a day off
means an escape
from the senseless
empty grind
regardless
of a designated
occasion
often relegated
to only distant
official recognition

I hope
that old man
can accept
that wars
were also fought
and strikes
also organized
to earn us
the freedom
to forget

if only
temporarily
as individuals

never
permanently
as a society
