Dogs 2010

GREEN AGAIN
(3/16/10)

I looked out
today
and saw the lawn
coming back
to life

the mower
edger
and fertilizer
spreader
are calling to me
from the
garage

bugs
sweat
weeds
unknown rashes
and dog shit
await
to torment me
for the next
seven months

don't
get me
wrong

I do derive
some satisfaction
from a well tended yard
and the order
that it brings
to the external
extent
of our home

and
I don't mind
the work outside
taking the place
of the winter
workouts
in

but
it does seem
strange
that so much
effort is required
to battle the forces
of greenery and growth
when so much
on this planet
is dying
as a result
of our assumed
progress

they tell me
to recycle
not to pollute
and to contribute
as much as possible
to the regreening
of America

maybe
I should let it all
return
to its natural
state
and simply
clear a path
from the front door
to the street
for safe passage

establish
our own
corner lot
of wilderness
and wildlife
sanctuary

somehow
I think
that neither
my wife
nor the city
would applaud
the perceived
lack of effort
in such
an environmental
statement

maybe
I'll burn
this year
