Dogs 2010

GOOD TO BE HOME
(10/1/10)

I pull
the car
into the garage
gather the reusable
grocery bag
that serves
as my brief case
step out onto
the concrete floor
then go through
the door
into the backyard
heading
toward the house

right away
I notice
something
amiss

much water
soggy globs
of toilet paper
and an ample
amount
of soap
suds
block
my way

plus
a slight
stench
rising
from the resultant
combination

my usual
workout
would have
to wait
for an unusual
bout of work
with the
sewer line

after
a circuitous route
to the backdoor
I go inside
to turn off
the washing
machine
change clothes
and inform
my wife
of the latest
needed repair
to our
71 year old
home

back
in the garage
I dig around
to find a
50 foot coil
of steel band
tipped with
a bullet like
projectile

the standard
tool
for such
an instance

standing
ankle deep
in the middle
of the new
shallow shit pond
I open the cleanout
next to the house
and begin feeding
the mess
of metal
into the mess
of man
hoping
for the best

about
30 feet out
I hit an obstruction
and after about
a half dozen
attempts
break through

still
no drainage

I continue
feeding
until the full
50 feet are spent
then slowly
start
the rewind

at the magic
30 feet mark
I feel
the same snag
but this time
when I pull
the end free
there is
a wonderful
whoosh
of soiled
water
and I am able
to see
down
to the reflowing
sewer line
below

I close
the cleanout
secure
the gear
and clean up
as well
as possible
outside

I reek
of an strange
mixture
of mud
laundry detergent
and just
a hint
of urine
and excrement

time
for a shower
and a hope
that the result
will find its way
to the city's
jurisdiction
this time
