Dogs 2010

DRIVEBY READ
(7/16/10)

it's a
monumental tome
taking one
by surprise
over the rise
in the road

bound
at a diagonal
pages turned
by dynamite
and earth
excavators
a story is told
millennia old
of the planet
and its growing
pains

muted
understated chapters
deceptively describe
cataclysmic events
volcanic eruptions
earthquakes
floods
and widespread
sedimentary
settlings

we tilt
our heads
as we speed
through the middle
of the split spine
wondering at the
striped saga
depicted

we clear
the mountain pass
and the cover
is closed
the highway
taking us down
past the cut cliffs
into the forested
hills and vales
of the Ozarks

beneath us
the tale
continues
as we become
the waiting characters
to be compressed
by the next layer
of Earth's epic

one day
possibly
to be read
by future beings
with different
eyes

we
shall be
the light tan
band of banality
just below
the surface
