Dogs 2010

DISPLACED
(5/15/10)

out
on our nightly
walk
we see a clump
of feathered gray
huddled
in a muddled
gutter

a young
starling
dragging a leg
one wing splayed
scared
and nowhere
to go

it didn't
belong there

"can't
we do something?"

she asks

then
the bird
was cupped
in my hands
protesting loudly
at first
then offering
only sporadic
struggles
to its new
predicament

it didn't
belong there
either

we finished
our usual route
driversby staring
at the captured
starling
in my grasp
it's head
the only
thing
visible

I must have
looked
quite
the idiot

finally home
no birdcage
in sight
a towel
laid on the
kitchen floor
clothes basket
emptied and upended
to provide some
confinement
for the now
resigned
avian

it certainly
didn't belong
there

calls
were made
an emergency
vet clinic located
15 miles away
and a box
found
to temporarily
transport
our charge

soon
we were
in my truck
on the expressway
heading to the
nearby suburb

none of us
belonged
there

clinic reached
we entered
the vet office
and the transfer
was made

the tech
thought
that the leg
and wing
could be mended
then the muddy
bundle of wildlife
could be returned
to the wild

situation
resolved
we finished
the 30 mile
round trip
and were finally
back
where we belonged
on a Friday night
in America

this morning
the wife will call
to check the status
of the patient

I wonder
if the little shit
would've found
a bush
under which
to hide
and recover
then return
to the trees
where
it belonged

of course
it may have been
some animal's meal
five minutes
after our passing

who knows
what to do
in such
situations?

I only knew
from the look
in her eyes
that I had
no choice
in the matter

pass that
bird by
and I
would have been
sleeping
on the couch
for sure

and I
definitely
didn't belong
there
