Dogs 2010

DIRTY OLD MAN PLAN
(5/11/10)

we've
juggled
health insurance
ever since
marriage

full time
school for her
and perpetual debt
taxing our account
has forced us
to forego
a policy
and hope that
our health holds
until she gets a job
and we can afford
some coverage
again

in the
interim
we rely upon
a quasi vegan
frequent exercise
supplement laden
lifestyle
to ward off
disease
and injury

the new
Affordable
Health Care Act
seems quite the joke
since corporate panic
has pushed
premium costs
of once marginally
affordable plans
far out
of our
paltry reach

"wait until
2014"

they tell
us

"you'll
really see
some relief
then"

what I need
is immediate
deliverance
from the current
welt of worry
attached to my
inner stomach
lining

arriving home
last night
I found a package
resting upon the pile
of remedial parchment
which represents
my research
into the matter

removing
the wrapping
I uncovered
Bukowski's
The Continual
Condition

how apropos

after
three or
four poems
I was already
breathing
easier

a dozen
later
I was smiling
and feeling
empowered
again

halfway
through
and I was ready
for those run down
bungalow court dreams
absent of any
establishment
entanglements

this morning
I put the book
in my truck
since I have
automotive liability only
and brought it
to my desk
where this
dinky company
defers any benefits
involvement

when I
begin to feel
any momentary
physical panic
I reach over
and read
a few lines
to restore
my casual
repose

while I know
that the collection
is questionable currency
in an emergency
situation
it will surely
sustain me
through the times
of daily
questioning

unfortunately
reading his work
fills my wife
with disgust
and not
well being

perhaps
she simply
needs
to get laid
