Dogs 2010

CROSSEXISTING
(6/18/10)

I
never wanted
to be a
web developer

I
never wanted
to be a
sales manager

I
never wanted
to be an
internet
service
provider

I have
become
all three
in order
to be sure
that all three
professionals
are doing
their jobs

it is not
that they are bad
at what they do
it is simply
that they
are so involved
in the minutia
of their professions
that they fail
to step back
and take
a common sense
appraisal
of their efforts

when
my mother
was dying
of cancer
I became
an amateur medico
an insurance aficionado
and an advocate
of everything
connected
to getting her
through
another day

I was forced
into these vocations
by repeated
failures
of the system
to ever work
automatically
in her favor

what I found
were people
less interested
in performing
their jobs
than say
lunch
or quitting
time

I get home
at the end
of the day
check the mail
then begin
the walk
down the street
to forward
a neighbor's letter
mistakenly
delivered
to us

along
the way
I see trash
in the street
leftovers
of the day's
garbage pickup

I'll
get it
on the return
trip

after I
herd
a wandering
child back
to his
yard

we must
become
all things
just to know
when things
are properly
done
