CORRODED COINAGE
(9/4/10)

end
of the day
finally home
I empty my pockets
onto the dresser

keys
comb
wallet
chapstick
and an odd
assortment
of change

one dime
catches
my eye

tarnished
and nasty
it looks
ancient

as a child
I had a fascination
with collecting
coins
both old
and bizarre

collections
long gone
I still have
an itinerant
interest

I pick up
the ten cent
piece
assuming
it to be
40
50
maybe 60
years old

metal
of this wear
may denote
a Mercury
head

nope
just FDR
and as I squint
below my trifocals
I bring the date
into focus

1997

shit

only 13
years
old

I toss
it back
onto the pile
in disgust

exchanging
work clothes
for walking
I look into
the mirror
and comb
the graying hair
from my
eyes

Roosevelt
looked old
but the image
laughing back
was truly
vintage
