Dogs 2010

CONTINUED JOURNEY
(1/19/10)

he left
the restroom
at the side
of the gas station
paused for a second
in the afternoon sun
then squatted down
to lean against
the whitewashed wall
closing his eyes
and enjoying
the warming
rays
on a December
day

it was good
to be
out West
again

he had
crisscrossed
these states
numerous times
in his youth
loving the movement
unabated
through the open
expanse

he
could have stopped
at any one of these
small desert towns
sporadically spaced
along
the stretching
highways
and called it
home

just to wake
every day
look out
the window
and see that
uncluttered view
to the horizon
would sure beat
any super cool condo
picture window
framing
a downtown
skyline

maybe some
simple job
involving
maximum movement

delivery
oilfield service
county maintenance
to keep the flow
going
and the outlook
mobile

he heard
the horn honk
so slid to standing
and slowly
walked
to the front
of the building

the three kids
were bouncing
in the backseat

wife
reclined
head back
wet wash cloth
over her eyes
still as death
on the passenger
side

she
did not
travel
well
