Dogs 2010

an access road
overlooking the interstate
has been an afternoon
respite for me
for years

after
eight hours
at a desk
I take a break
to just stand
and stare
at the passing
traffic

an east-west
kinetic artery
of relaxation
beyond my usual
foot and a half
focal length

it's much
like watching
a linear fish tank
that dimensionally restricts
the colorful transit
of its quasi-aquatic
automobile
inhabitants

I align
the consciousness
to that flow of mobility
much beyond my control
regulate the breathing
and drift away
for a few
minutes

lately
they are expanding
four lanes to six
which includes
tearing up
pavement
tearing down
buildings
and severely
rerouting
the commuting
hoard

the orderly
motion
is gone

the random
collection
of movement
and noise
no longer suits
my quest
for temporary
serenity

yesterday
I found an anthill
in a nearby
vacant lot

their labors
soothing
and far
quieter
to observe

I am
calm
again

the neighbors
however
are noticeably
more nervous
