COASTAL CASUALTY
(5/3/10)

seeing
the calamity
portrayed
on television
or the internet
as color coded maps
wind dispersal patterns
tide predictions
or high in the sky
camera coverage
hardly conveys
the toxic toll
of the tragedy

seeing
that first
bloated fish
on a remote beach
or oil covered cormorant
getting a dish detergent
decontamination
relays the rashness
of the environmental
enormity
on a much
more relatable
scale

how many tons
of petroleum puke
will be hurled
into the marshes?

like an
alcoholic
vomiting
the same old
overconsumption
again and again
upon the immaculate
living lawns
of his neighbors
leaving biohazard
brown spots
to mark
the repeated
transgressions

drink up
America
there is always
another yard
down
the street
to desecrate
