Dogs 2010

AUTOMATIC
(3/25/10)

so much
of the daily
routine
is accomplished
unthinkingly

getting
ready for work
driving to work
arriving at work

locks
keycodes
passwords
all entered
without
a thought

if someone
asked me
what key
what code
what password
was needed
I would
have to think
at bit

it's catalogued
up there
somewhere
along with heartbeats
respiration
and blinking
I guess

I still have
a combination lock
from my gear locker
in a Cape May
New Jersey
boot camp
winter of
'82 - '83

my wife
asked me
for the numbers
the other day
but I didn't
have a
clue

a few days
later
I quickly
picked up
the lock
and opened it
on the third
try

I wonder
what else
is stored
in that memory
that so surely
obscures
those oft
repeated
functions

maybe
all this typing
is a fundamentally
remembered
endeavor
as well

when asked
I have little idea
from where
most of it
originates

it
just happens
without much
thought

as any
reader
can tell
