Dogs 2010

AEROHUMILITY
(9/24/10)

the wind
was really
ripping

25 to 30 mph
with gusts
over 40

every step
was a battle
in balance
and strength

I needed
the exercise
but the stiff breeze
was removing
all enjoyment
from the
excursion

suddenly
a colorful object
fluttered
by my
face

a kaleidoscope
of orange
black
and white

at first
I suspected
an Autumn leaf
launched
by the
maelstrom

then
it came
around
again

a Monarch
butterfly

how
could something
so fragile
so easily
defeat
a force
so fearsome?

it seemed
amused
by me
as it circled
and dived
apparently
unbuffeted
by the attacking
air

its
attraction
with me
worn thin
it quickly
continued
ahead
in a
more or less
straight trajectory
with no more
apparent effort
than on a calm
quiet
day

I stopped
for a minute
and considered
my debilitating
aerodynamic
drag

I was
not meant
for this
planet

I turned
and unsteadily
made my way
home

sheltered
and secluded
seemed
the only way
I could stretch
my wings
