Dogs 2010

ADRIFT
(7/10/10)

circus
slaughterhouse
the world greets us
each day

audience
clowns
cattle
butchers
we mostly fill
respective roles
without question

hatred
ridicule
if we refuse
to play

some
shave
their heads
or dye their hair
piercings
tattoos
brands
anything
to express
that they
do not want
to belong

try not
to stick out
my dear mother
would say

later
most morph
back to normal
work
pick up
paychecks
purchase product
pay bills
taxes
vote
and mow
lawns

you'll be
so alone
if you follow
your way

still
there are those
who furtively fade
from surveillance
and comparison
living among us
but existing
on planes
obscure

see you
what frees you
others cannot
not say

they fulfill
purposes unknown
defyingly defining
their own destinies
with the abstract
and seemingly
insane

freely
you forfeit
the holy right
to pray

they need
no outside
consolation
consecration
finding validation
verification
from within

your head
with no bed
safely on which
to lay

they just
don't give
a shit
