Dogs 2010

'56 BEL AIRE
(12/8/10)

the first
car
that I remember
as a child
was a heavy
metal monster

my sister
and I
could each
stretch out
for naps
on long trips
in the big
back yard
of a back seat
overlapping
but never
touching

not touching
was very
important
as the time

no
cumbersome
seatbelts
to get
in our
way

when awake
I would constantly
watch
my father
motor
the vehicle
about
as I tried to
understand
the driving
process

gas
lights
brake
signals
PNDSLR
steering wheel
windshield wipers

it didn't
look
that hard

the radio
was my
favorite

something
magical
about those
knobs
numbers
and pushbuttons
controlling that
staticful
selection
of AM music
and voices
from distant
stations

all those
mobile motions
and sounds
fuelled
my young
imagination
for adventure

now
my vehicle
is a necessary
tool
and the radio
a bane of idiocy
from which
I refrain

at times
though
I can still
smell
that old car

imagine myself
eyes closed
in the darkness
listening
to the songs
and people
fade in
and out

as the
rudimentary
suspension
slowly
rocks me
to sleep
