Dogs 2009

I
turned 50
this year

no big deal
for one of those people
who has always said
"they're only
numbers"

and except
for a few
minor
but chronic
aches and pains
I feel better
than ever

there is hardly
anything
that I could have done
at 21
that I cannot
do now

but
the mirror
is a different
story

the hair
the teeth
the trifocals
the complexion

no one
would confuse me
with 21
31
or even 41
any longer

only those met
through email
letters
or over the phone
are fooled
into thinking
that they are dealing
with someone
younger

that
gives me
some hope

unless
they mistake me
for some immature
prepubescent
of course

vision alone
betrays me

ironic
since on the other side
of these graying eyes
I still feel the same
as that guy
with his first
crush
drink
car
job
love
enlightenment

when the
inner sight
starts to fade
only then
will I begin
to question
my immortality

today
however
I still live
forever
